Harper St。 George starts out a new series set in the Gilded Age， a time when the failing fortunes of the British aristocracy meant they had no choice but to accept the attentions of upstart Americans with their new money and brash ways。 In The Heiress Gets the Duke， St。 George gives us the story of August， a thoughtful， independent woman who has no interest in marriage to an aristocrat， especially since marriage would mean giving up her work for her father’s ironworks。 Her younger sister is offered up to the eponymous Duke， Evan Sterling， but he decides to woo August instead。 Partly out of fascination for a woman who would refuse a Duke and partly out of financial desperation。 St。 George does a terrific job at making us want desperately for the two characters to get together already while at the same time having real sympathy for August’s ambivalence about marriage。 That this romance is set in the Gilded Age makes it even more compelling reading。 There are cracks in the rigid social constructs of the more familiar Regency period， and watching her characters navigate some of the same circumstances （waltz etiquette） and new ones （the decline of the agriculture-based economy） is a treat for readers of historical romance。 Intelligent， engaging characters combined with a heartfelt romance – what more could you ask for？

I love a good historical romance。 I enjoyed this book but after loving Evie dunmores books it just fell to similar but not quite as good。 I guess all historical romance is somewhat similar I just found myself comparing it to bringing down the duke and bridgerton and thinking they both did a better job。 It was still enjoyable and the love scene was steamy！

Loved it！ August was an independent American girl， she works with her father and brother in their company。 She thought to be an asset to the company as an employer but her parents thought differently and I've felt the sense of betrayal that August feels with her parents， and more with her father that she thought were her ally。 Evan was a second son thrown in the title without the means to maintain it afloat， so he tries everything before succumb to his mother's request for a marriage in the weal Loved it！ August was an independent American girl， she works with her father and brother in their company。 She thought to be an asset to the company as an employer but her parents thought differently and I've felt the sense of betrayal that August feels with her parents， and more with her father that she thought were her ally。 Evan was a second son thrown in the title without the means to maintain it afloat， so he tries everything before succumb to his mother's request for a marriage in the wealth。August is horrified that her parents could think to sell her sister for a title so she tries everything to prevent the said marriage。Little she knew that Evan had chosen her as bride and all her attempts felt on deaf earsTheir voyage forward to the happy end is full of misgivings， misunderstandings， and passions。And I'm looking forward to Violet's story， for she is not so demure as her parents think。 。。。more

This was fun。 I wish we spent a bit more time in New York bc I love the Gilded Age setting， however， I get why it was mostly set in Victorian England。 Couple of things bugged me but overall this was a good start to the series。

The chemistry between Evan and August is clearly there and it’s a sweet story。 But I found the book to be so boring overall because of all the fluff。 Clearly this is a period romance， and a large picture is to be painted regarding the various contexts and sceneries。 But it was just too much to hold my attention at times。 I often found myself just skipping to dialogue between the characters。

American heiress August Crenshaw essentially pulls a 19th century Katniss Everdeen and volunteers as tribute to save her little sister from being forced into a loveless marriage of convenience with the Duke of Rothschild。 The Crenshaw family has money but needs access; the Duke has access but needs money。 According to the pervasive patriarchal oppression that dictates social norms， that’s a match made in heaven。⠀I’m loving how August’s character is used to highlight the differences in social cus American heiress August Crenshaw essentially pulls a 19th century Katniss Everdeen and volunteers as tribute to save her little sister from being forced into a loveless marriage of convenience with the Duke of Rothschild。 The Crenshaw family has money but needs access; the Duke has access but needs money。 According to the pervasive patriarchal oppression that dictates social norms， that’s a match made in heaven。⠀I’m loving how August’s character is used to highlight the differences in social customs and behavior between 1875 New York and 1875 London: she has the best of one world， which grants her the perspicacity to rebel against the worst of the other。 Much like New York itself just before the turn of the century， August is progressive， independent， and ambitious。 She doesn’t care about the whispers in London society that dub her “mannish” because she is firmly anti-marriage of convenience， good at math， and full of determination to one day take over the family empire， Crenshaw Iron Works， a la Fallon Carrington。My three favorite aspects of this book are as follows: 1。 August herself。 She’s smart， but not just on the sidelines: she uses her intelligence to help both herself and those in her family’s company’s employ。 She’s extremely wealthy but neither pretentious nor unfeeling。 She doesn’t let her feelings get the best of her in a way that jeopardizes her entire life （I feel like that happens a lot in romance）。 She couldn’t care less that gossip rags write snippy things about her for attending meetings advocating for women’s education。 She is sensible and driven without being uptight or naive。⠀2。 The balance between history and fiction。 I loved August’s story as much as I loved the references to actual pivotal characters and events in the women’s rights movement in the 19th century， like Minor v。 Happersett， Barbara Bodichon， and Susan B。 Anthony （and the Enforcement Act of 1870）。⠀3。 Evan （the Duke）。 There is very little not to like， but also a lot to love。 He participates in “bare-knuckle brawls” under an alias in an illegal underground fight club to make enough money to support his family and pay the debts his loser of a father left behind。 He also is very into how progressive August is。 Competent， selfless， and what I consider the 19th century version of a male feminist？ Doesn’t get much hotter than that。As someone who has many a bone to pick with the romance genre， I have to say - absolutely recommend this one！！ 。。。more

August is a New York City heiress visiting a friend in London for the Season during the Gilded Age。 Her childhood friend has been forced to marry an English lord to advance her family's social agenda and the marriage is a deeply unhappy one。 Her friend's marriage is loosely based on poor Consuelo Vanderbilt's forced marriage to the 9th Duke of Marlborough--the duke got cash and Consuelo got a title。 Yay？ Everyone was miserable and the marriage ended in divorce。 August can see that her friend is August is a New York City heiress visiting a friend in London for the Season during the Gilded Age。 Her childhood friend has been forced to marry an English lord to advance her family's social agenda and the marriage is a deeply unhappy one。 Her friend's marriage is loosely based on poor Consuelo Vanderbilt's forced marriage to the 9th Duke of Marlborough--the duke got cash and Consuelo got a title。 Yay？ Everyone was miserable and the marriage ended in divorce。 August can see that her friend is desolate and so she fights any way she can when she learns that her own parents have similar social ambitions for their own family。 August's family comes from a railroad dynasty， much like the Vanderbilt tycoons， and when the parents find out there's a duke who desperately needs cash they agree to a betrothal between said duke and August's younger， and more traditional sister， Violet。 Both sisters fight their parents who are unyielding。 They understand that this alliance will bring them the social status not afforded them as new money in NYC and will also bring business opportunities in England and the British Empire。 As a feisty American， August decides to take matters into her own hands and tells the duke to leave her sister alone。 And he does。 But only to fix his attentions on her， instead。So this is the tried-and-true marriage of necessity trope， but with the interesting twist that as an independent American， August has no interest in an English title。 Or a husband of duty。 She works in the family business and draws her own salary and really can't see the need for marriage unless it's a love match。 The duke finds himself having to rely on his wits to persuade August to marry him， which， as an English peer of the realm， he's never had to do。 Woman fall all over him all the time so someone who is not swooning at the idea of becoming a duchess really takes him off his game。 These two are always extremely honest with each other and it's fun to watch their verbal sparring。 （Until the Great Misunderstanding later in the book sees them acting out of character。） They form an emotional bond and it is heartening to see them try to solve both of their problems together。 This is a better-than-average fun， romance book。 。。。more
